The opponents of free speech are using the excuse of stopping cyberbullying as a means to ram oppressive legislation down our throats that would infringe upon our First Amendment rights and make speaking your mind a criminal offense. H.R. 1966 sponsored by California Representative Linda T. Sanchez contains the following language:
(a) Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.
So if you offend someone on Facebook, send a nasty email or write a blog post criticizing someone you could end up going to prison. Yeah that’s not too oppressive.
Call & write your Representative and tell them that you do not want your Right to Free Speech restricted by this ludicrous bill.
